Review: Skate 2

1 03 2009

A kick flippin’ review for Skate 2.

skate-2-logo

Skate 2 begins with the character customisation screen, all the usual features apply with the ability to edit your characters facial features, body shape, clothing and accessories.

You can come back to the Character Edit screen via the Start menu to change your characters’ appearance, apparel, accessories and deck wheels and trucks. You must purchase everything before you can use it and some things need to be unlocked by completing certain single player and online challenges.

The story then begins with a video describing how your character has recently come out of jail and how the city of San Vanelona has changed since you were last here (Skate 1)

A brief tutorial section introduces you to the fundamentals of skating and introduces the new ability to get off your board and walk/run around and the ability to move some objects in the city to create your own skating spots.

After meeting with Slappy in his park and doing the first few challenges you are free to explore the city.

(Welcome to New San Vanelona)

There are a range of challenges and activities for you to complete within your single player game. Some of these are photo and video footage challenges, Death races and Thrasher Hall of Meat challenges. Completing challenges earns you money which you can spend in the Skate shop or on various betting opportunities during the game.

The photo an video challenges simply require you to perform a certain trick or line in a set area e.g. kick flip over the gap.

Death races require you to race against other skaters down hill to a designated finish line, you must follow a set path passing through checkpoints to add to your time limit.

The Thrasher Hall of Meat challenges were my personal favourite. At any time during game play you can press (LS)+(RS)+[LT]+[RT] and your character will force a bail (fall off his/her board) you can then hold your (RS) in different directions to make your skater perform different poses. Cannon ball, Judo Kick, Spread Eagle, Pencil Dive. Your (LS) then controls the spin of your skater during the bail. The higher you fall, or the longer you are in the air the harder you will slam. The object of the challenges is to fulfill certain damages to your skater e.g. break 10 bones in one bail.

(Hall of Meat description from the game developers)

Within your game you will meet a large list of professional skaters who will offer you Pro challenges which are similar to the footage challenges in which you must complete a certain trick within a certain area, some simply require you to follow the pro to a location staying within a certain distance in metres.

Owning the Spot is another returning challenge to the game in which you must perform a trick or a line of tricks to earn a set amount of points in a certain area aka spot. Once you have owned the spot you can kill it by performing tricks to earn a higher set amount of points on the same spot.

At any time during your game you can bring up the menu and enter into an Xbox live match. You can choose to join a quick match in which you join a random game either all ready in progress or about to begin. Or you can choose to join a custom match in which you can select a specific game type to play. To be honest I’m not sure what exactly all of the online activities are, as I didn’t play much online myself. I do know however you can do Death Races online. You can also do Best trick competitions in which players much battle to earn the most points in one trick or a line of tricks within a time limit.

New San Vanelona has changed and policing of the streets has become a big threat to all Skaters in forms of extra security and many areas have been “capped” (metal caps over stairs, ledges and rails rendering them un skate-able) Due to this you can use your phone, by pressing [LB] to call/hire some people to provide certain services for you.

You can hire Big Black and he will provide you with some personal security, allowing you to skate high risk areas without interruption from security guards.

Mikey will un-cap areas for you, so you can skate them freely, but if security are in the area and they “see” him do it then it may immediately become capped again.

Sammy will drain swimming pools for you, which turns them into skate-able bowls.

(Sammy’s Pool Draining Service, High Quality version available on Youtube site!)

You can also use your phone to offer throwdown challenges to pro skaters that you have met during your game. After deciding on an amount to bet you take part in a game of S.K.A.T.E. The object of the game is to set a trick for the other skater to copy, the pro always goes first, if you or the pro bail, or repeat a previously set trick then its becomes the other skaters’ turn. Failure to copy the set trick earns a letter. The loser is the first person to spell out S.K.A.T.E.

Upon completion of the main story challenges you get your congratulatory F.M.V, you are then free to continue your game, completing any un-finished challenges and earning any achievements you need.

So all in all I give Skate 2 -  9 out of 10.

Another graphically sound feature packed game with plenty of gameplay to enjoy. In my opinion the Skate games are alot better than the “Tony Hawk” Range, So if you want a real fun Skating experience I can highly recommend Skate 2!!

Thanks for reading

*IN GAME HINT*
Within the in-game Skate shop you can purchase a range of clothing for your Skater but there is no option to change the colour of your chosen items… Or is there…
This works for T-Shirts, Button Shirts, Hoodies, Jackets, and Sweaters. This will not work if you already purchased the Custom Tee. All I can say is when your doing this NEVER purchase the Custom Tee!

Please follow the steps they are very simple.

Step 1. Choose your T-Shirt, Button Shirt, Hoodie, Jacket, or Sweater. If you already have it purchased that is fine!

Step 2. Once you have your Top selected go back to Merchandise/Store. Now select T-Shirts, and click on Custom Tee. From there just hit Start, and it will take you into the purchasing menu.

Step 3. WHATEVER YOU DO DON’T PURCHASE THE CUSTOM TEE

Step 4. Hit edit receipt, check off remove item (Top: Custom Tee should be highlighted). Now just hit back to store and it should have your chosen top selected with the color palette. Choose the color you want and just hit start and your good to go.

Review: You’re In The Movies

23 02 2009

Heres a lights, camera, action review for You’re In The Movies.

youre-in-the-movies-logo

In order to play this game you will need the Xbox 360 Live Vision Camera. You can buy the game and camera together in a pack, and you can buy them separate if you already have the game or the camera!

To enjoy playing this game you will need good room lighting, so you should either open window blinds and curtains or if you are playing at night I suggest you close all curtains and have some bright lights on in the room!

A large clear space is best to play in with a plain backdrop, some clothing that contrasts with the backdrop is also good to help the camera to pick you up.

One thing I will say about the camera set up (In my game experience as it may differ between users!) the camera tends to miss parts of you off on the screen if you dont set it up correctly, im not exactly sure why it does this, but in all honesty I played in my room which wasnt a large environment and there was too much in the background for the camera to cope with. So I highly recommend playing in dark coloured clothing against a white wall! Here are the rules on this anyway.

There are 30 movies you can choose from in 5 genres…

Action, Sci-Fi, Horror, Disaster and Classic.

… Once you have chosen your  movie you must then choose how many players there are up to a maximum of 4. Each player must then take the sreenshot of themselves which acts as their in game avatar. Every session is made up of different sections in which players take it in turns to act out a certain emotion or action, and take part in mini games which all make up the final product.

youre_in_the_movies_scared(Here is an actress acting scared)

The more actors there are determines how many rounds of acting will take place, An average 4 player movie can take 20 – 30 mins to complete. This can get a bit tiresome and repetative as you tend to be doing the same things over and over again. If you are going for the 1000 gamer points you will need to complete all 30 movies in 4 player mode, so i suggest you do this from the begining save repeating all of the movies! If you do not have 4 people to play with you can act all parts in the movies yourself (Which I did for some movies) but this gets very boring after a short time!

Some mini games will require two actors to take part at a time, like the one below in which players must splash each other with mud.

youreinthemovies2plyr(It’s A Bit Messy)

Once all of the actors have finished acting their parts, you are then shown the final product in which the game puts together your recorded parts into the movie you have chosen. Here is an example of a finished movie…

Another game mode is Director mode, this game lets you become the director and create your own movies from start to finish. You choose how many and which scenes will be used, you can even add your own vocals and sound effects.

Some of the achievements require you to complete certain mini games, If like me you complete all of the movies and havent attained all of these achievments you can play any of the mini games  via the  menu, to save you going through movies again trying to find certain mini games!

So all together I give You’re In The Movies -  8 out of 10.

A great party game with lots of hilarious movies to take part in, unfortunately due to some potential graphical issues, and lack of continuous enjoyable single playability I have to mark it down slightly!

Thanks for reading

Review: Fable 2

23 01 2009

A Heroic review for a brilliant Action RPG…

fable2logo1

Wow Is the first and main thing I have to say… WOW. Fable 2 has had me hooked and is very different from most games for me. Usually I will play a game until I haved attained the 1000 points or until I have completed it and cannot possibly earn anymore points, then I will trade it in.  Fable 2 however has kept me coming back for more. Since buying the game on 27th December 08 and completing it a week later I have completed it multiple times with a few different characters.

I didnt play Fable 1 so I dont really have anything to compare it too, but I will still offer my opinion.

After selecting a male or female character the begining of the game plays like a tutorial as you are a child living on the streets with your sister, it teaches you about movement, combat and character interaction etc. After the events of the introduction pass you find yourself now older as you have become a strong young man/woman and you can then begin your journey.

fable2child(A young male character begining his journey)

Fable 2 offers players a huge free roam environment called Albion in which to explore. (Which is 10 times bigger than Fable 1 for anyone that played it.) This environment is filled with many different regions each with its own city for you to explore. The graphics in Fable 2 are stunning, the differing environments from town to town give you a detailed impression of how life in Albion would be, from the bustling streets of Bowerstone Market Town Center to the lush greenery of Oakfield are very detailed and believable. Similar to the system featured in “Oblivion” and “Fallout 3″ you can fast travel. So if you dont want to make your journeys on foot, you can select what region you want to travel to within the game menu!

fable2oakfield(Oakfield’s Beauty in all its glory!)

The concept of the game consists of working your way from region to region completeting quests that you recieve along the way. The main quest line will take you through the story of the game whereas you can accept side quests from villagers and other characters all of which you can complete in any way you want. A large part of the game makes you choose whether to complete it by being good or evil, You characters visual appearance will change dependant on your charcter’s lieniency towards good/evil, and pure/corrupt. If you are good a halo will appear above you head, whereas if you are evil, devil like horns wil appear on your character’s forehead. Also if you are pure glowing light blue streaks will appear all over your charcters body, whereas if you are corrupt, darker dull red streaks will appear.

fable2evil(A completely evil character, with full Devil horns and glowing red eyes!)

Along your travels you will encounter a variety of creatures and humans that will attack you these range from the dwarf like Hobbes (It is said Hobbes kidnap children and turn them into Hobbes themselves) to  werewolf like Balverines to huge towering Trolls. Human enemies include bandits and assasins.

fable2combat(Being surrounded by bandits doesnt worry our brave hero.)

To combat these foes, you can use Hand to Hand Combat, using weapons like Longswords, Katanas, Axes and Maces. Long Ranged weapons include, Crossbows, Rifles and Pistols. You can also use Magic Attacks such as the electric Shock, the fire Inferno, and Raise Dead which raises the souls of fallen enemies around you which come back to fight for you. The combat system is pretty basic and its really down to button bashing but the attacks are set to X (Hand to Hand),Y (Long Ranged) and B (Magic) buttons. If you die in combat, your character will recieve battle scars on their body.

fable2shock (A very “shocking” performance for those hollowmen!)

During combat you can earn experience points, you earn different points dependant on your attack, Blue strength for hand to hand attacks, Yellow skill for ranged attacks, Red will for magic attacks also Green for general experience points. These experience points appear as little orbs that drop from your enemies as you attack. When the battle is over or even during if your daring you can hold your “RT” trigger and the experience will be drawn into your character. If you die in combat you simply revive in the same spot you died you just lose any battle experience you hadn’t collected during the combat up to that point.

fable2orbs(Sorry about the quality, Here you can see the experience orbs on the ground!)

Aside from all of the quests and fighting there is a lot to do in Albion. You can try to live a normal life in that you can make people fall in live with you by impressing them enough, to a point that you can get married by offering a ring to someone that loves you, Upon marrying and selecting a marital home you can have protected or unprotected sex with your wife/husband, unprotected sex can however lead to your character contracting STD’s and you could also have a little child of your own.

fable2love(“Do not worry ladies I have time for all of you”)

Within the many towns and regions of Albion there are many properties to buy like shops, pubs, houses etc. You can earn money by renting out the houses, and from the profit your shops bring in, but dependant on your pure/corrupt lieniency you can choose to alter rent to any where between 100% above or below the oringinal prices. Obviously charging no rent is going to make you pure, whereas being greedy will make people dislike you and become corrupt.

Aside from your statistic building experience points, you can earn Renown points which basically add up to how famous/well known you are within Albion. You can earn renown by completing quests for people and earning trophies which you can show off to people via the expression wheel.

fable2trophy1(My Hero displaying one of his many Trophies.)

During your time spent in Albion you will undoubtedly encounter an endless amount of villagers, settlers and other people to converse with. To interact with people you must use the expression wheel. There are various expressions to use from Social, Fun and Flirtatious ones to Scary and even Rude ones. All of which have different effects on how people react to you e.g. Fun and Social expressions will make people like and even love you, whereas Scary or Rude expressions will make people fear or even hate you.

fable2expression1(Trying to impress “Sue the Housewife” with some flirty expressions)

If no one else within your Fable experience, you will always find one friend wherever you go. Man’s best friend itself, your dog. Always at your side your dog follows you on quests and wherever you go throughout Albion. Although it is nice to have the company while your travelling, your dog does have its uses. You can train your dog to be a stronger fighter, you can also teach him to hunt for treasure in which case he will find treasure chests and items buried in dig spots that are near you and will lead you to them.

fable2dog(Giving your faithfull friend some loving praise!)

There are two versions of the online multiplayer. First of all there is the co-operative mode in which someone can join your gameas a physical character and help you with quests and fighting etc. The other version is chosen from the in game menu. You must select to display player orbs and whether to display friends only or everyone. Then little orbs will appear which represent other players online. You can then approach the orbs and interact with them by chatting or giving them gifts etc.

fable2onlineorb(Here I am interacting with another player’s orb online via Xbox Live.)

Downloadable Content: Knothole Island = 800 microsoft points.

Knothole Island gives players an extra quest line in which you must solve Knothole’s weather problems, you can help the “Box of Secrets” shop restock by finding certain items around Albion, and their are 10 informative books detialing Knothole Island’s history for you to find within the region. By completing these tasks throughout you can earn another 3 achievements worth 100 gamerpoints.

So finally all in all I give Fable 2 – 10 out of 10.

Another highly addictive RPG game that has had me hooked! With a brilliant story and great re-playabilitly and massive explorative capability this game keeps you coming back for more! I have given it top marks because, in my opinion, this game cannot be faulted!

Thanks for reading

Review: Lips

14 01 2009

A high note of a review for…

lips_logo3

Before I start the review I will have to say if you dont like karaoke or singing then you probably wont want this game, but then I will highly advise you to get it anyway!!

The main excuse I hear from/about people not playing this game is because they “Cant Sing?!”. The point is it doesnt matter, thats the best part of it. I cant sing to save my own life but I still rack in the high scores! The game would be boring if we were all beyonces (because of the vocal chords not the booty!)

Lips is a very simple yet very effective Karaoke game it has a simple layout with easy to navigate menus…

Sing mode. This is the bread and butter of the game the basis of this mode is simple you choose a song from the alphabetised list and you sing it Lips comes with 40 songs standard. After choosing a song you are taken to the video select screen. You can choose to sing along to the normal music video or you can choose from a list of “Party Games” to play while you sing wich are better played cooperatively….

- Virtual Music Video. The character within the video reacts to your gameplay, the more you perform and the better you do the character will dance and lip-sync along with you.
- Time Bomb. In this game players work together to perform well to build their star power meter and when full players can perform a gesture which then puts out the bombs fuse for a short period of time. The object of the game is to complete the song before the fuse runs out thereby exploding the bomb.
- Kiss presents two lovers trying to reach each other to kiss. Players must perform well to build their star power meter as the characters run towards each other, when the meter is full the gestures for both players will appear, at which time players must activate their gesture at the exact same time making the on screen characters kiss. However if players dont match their gestures then there are some nasty consequences!
- Vocal Fighters. This is the game for the competitor in all of us as it is a one-on-one competition to win the most fans. The object of the game is to perform better than your opponent to boot one another off the stage to earn points. At the end of the song who ever has the most points wins.

lipsvideochoice(Choosing which music video / party game to play.)

Once you have chosen you music video you can then choose to sing the full song or a shortened version of it.

The object of the game is to not only sing songs but perform them. You are awarded points for doing certain things within songs also dependant on how well you perform.

- Star Power – As you sing you earn star power which is indicated by a bar than runs above the on screen lyrics. Once the bar is full a character will appear displaying a specific gesture you are required to perform in order to activate your star power.

- Gestures – There are a variety of gestures for you to perform in order to activate your star power, all of which have you shaking and waving the microphone around in different positions, e.g. up in the air, around your head, up and down, under your leg.

- Stars – Once you have activated your star power using a gesture the coloured bar that runs with the lyrics changes to gold and the bars fill with sequential gold dots, these are stars, while you sing in star power activated you collect these stars which then add towards your total at the end. There is an achievement for earning 100,000 stars so you will be kept busy!

- Medals – Aside from earning stars you can earn medals. There are six medals that can be earned for each and every song you perform, these are…

- Pitch – Get accurate pitch.
- Rhythm – Match your vocal rhythm to that of the song.
- Performace – Successful use of mic gesturing during breaks in singing.
- Party – Successful use of the ‘Noise Makers’ on the Xbox 360 controller.
- Technique – Use of vical expertise i.e. vibrato
- Stability – Stay on pitch for the duration of the notes.

lipsvmv(You can see on the left, this player has just earned the Technique medal)

- Noise Makers – Although the game relies heavily on the use of the microphones, it does not make the Xbox 360 controller obselete. You can use the buttons on the controller to add your own sound effects in game to boost your score and earn medals. The noise makers are usually just symbals or clapping sounds to accompany your singing. As you use noise makers, and stay on beat with the song, a light begins to glow at the top of the screen when it is at its brightest you can shake your microphone during breaks in singing to earn star power alot quicker!

Jukebox Mode - This mode provides the music to your party, you can select from your favourite songs or select a play list and the game will play through your choices displaying the music video for that song. A brilliant feature of Jukebox mode and that of the Lips Microphones is that at any time during Jukebox mode you can simply shake your microphone to activate it and join in the song, at which time the game displays the lyrics for the current song and you can continue to sing as you do in normal Sing mode.

Get Music - This mode gives players the endless singing freedom they want and have always desired from karaoke games. Get music allows players to add their own music from external devices such as the Xbox 360 Hard Drive or from their iPod or other  MP3 player. Once a device is chosen all available tracks appear then players simply choose which songs they want and add them to Lips. A word of warning however to sing songs from an external device the said device must be plugged into the Xbox 360 Console, otherwise they become unavailable!

lipsgetmusic(The Get Music menu option, the icons floating above are all of the songs I have added)

.After adding music to Lips you are going to want to sing them. These songs however are not the same as the pre-loaded ones and are sung in Freestyle Mode. This mode displays random visualisations during singing and there are no lyrics displayed. Although singing songs you know and have added yourself is fun it does have a few downsides, since there are no registered lyrics you can find yourself struggling (Unlessof course you really know the song) Also since there are no defined lyrics there is very little to score from. Im not entirely sure how the scoring works in freestyle mode, but you do not earn medals and you earn very few stars.

My Lips – This mode is the home base for all of your Lips statistics. It is split into three columns…

- My Profile, this column displays your current star count, your total medals, your average song rank, your total songs sung and total unique songs sung, it also displays your current challenges wins.

- My Friends, this column displays all of your friends list, form which you can issue challenges to whomever you wish. Obviously only people with the Lips game themselves will be able to accept and take part in those challenges.

- Top Ten, this column shows you the top ten songs you have performed, it shows how many times you have performed each song and how many times it has been performed worldwide.

Options – This screen gives you the opportunity to edit you Lips experience to suit you. It offers you the choice to change your main menu theme, the colour of your sing bars whilst playing a song, you can turn your Microphone LED lights on or off, and you can choose whether you want sounds effects and noise makers on or off.

The only negative I would have to say is that Lips is a game that should be enjoyed in company, meaning if you play it often by yourself it can become very boring, also constantly singing the same songs gets annoying.

So finally all in all I give Lips – 9.5 out of 10.

This game is very fun indeed, With a brilliant achievement list and many singing opportunities it is fun for all the family!

Enjoy and Thanks

Review – Need for Speed: Undercover

30 12 2008

A high speed review for the next game in a brilliant series…

nfsuclogo1

As per usual begining to the NFS series you start out as a new racer in town, but this time with a twist “The hunter becomes the hunted” makes no sense?! I will explain! You are a cop and you are Undercover! There are various street gangs tearing up the streets of Tri-City Bay and it is your job to put an end to it, whilst taking part in it at the same time! Very fun.

Tri-City Bay, the new free roaming environment, is made up of over 100 miles of open free roaming road. Within Tri-City Bay you’ll find smaller areas such as Palm Harbor, Port Crecent, Gold Coast Mountains, and Sunset Hills.

(Tri-City Bay Trailer)

Within the game there are a vaiety of race modes for you to take part in. There are the usual Circuit and Sprint races, checkpoint races make a comeback but this time we have a new race mode highway battles in which racers battle to win through traffic filled highways. We also have a great online race mode called Cops ‘n’ Robbers, this mode splits racers into two teams Cops & robbers. The robbers have to race around the small track and pick up the bags of money and race them back to the safe point, and the cops have to stop them by blocking their path or staying right next to them while a red bar fills at the bottom of the screen. This time however drifting is not an included race mode within the game. However, as im sure a lot of people have tryed to do on past NFS titles, you can drift around the city simply by handbraking around corners or over / understeering your car, which actually initiates a drift you can attain points for, rather than imitation drifting attainable on previous titles!

nfsuc-race(Nissan Skyline GT-R vs. Porsche 911)

The cops are back in Undercover and bring similar opporunties to that of ” NFS Most Wanted” we have Cost to State races in which drivers must cause a set amount of damage to the city, by destroying things, and then evade the cops. Cop Takedown requires racers to disable a set amount of cop cars then evade, there are also simple evade events where you must simply evade capture.

nfsuc-cop-chase(Highspeed pursuit with a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution)

There are 55 very attractive picture perfect cars for you to drive on NFS Undercover these include…..

2006 Aston Martin DB9
2008 Audi R8
2006 Audi RS 4
2009 Audi S5

2006 Volkswagen Golf R32 (Mk V)
2008 Volkswagen Scirocco

(Some cars are available via collectors edition and/or DLC)

In a negative point towards the cars, I would say that pretty much all of them handle the same only differing with speed and performance after upgrade. My favourite car however has to be the Bugatti Veyron! Very fast! As you can see in this guys video…

The tuning / modifcation system is back in Undercover as usual you can upgrade your cars performance by purchasing the tiered upgrade packs. You can then adjust the tuning settings for you car to adapt better with your driving style! The visual modification system brings back the body kit, wheels & paint, but doesnt have a tremendous selection that aside its not really needed as this title isn’t based heavily on the look of the cars, obviously the driving is most important!

So finnally all in all I give Need for Speed: Undercover – 8.5 out of 10.

I have heard people compare this game as a mix between Most Wanted and Carbon, this game is yet another decent racing game in the Need for Speed series, Its not to everyones taste and does have a few minor flaws but it is still a very fun driving game! Im looking forward to the next one!

Thanks for reading!

Review – Call of Duty: World at War

27 12 2008

A blast from the past with a WWII review for…

cod5logo

(Apologies for the late posting!)

After the modern day events that took place in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, in Call of Duty 5 we are thrown back in time once more to the Second world war. The campaign features two stories to follow in which you play as two different soldiers, one features the U.S. Marines fighting the Japanese Army in the Pacific in which you play as Private Miller, and the other follows the Soviet Army’s advance on Berlin where you play as Private Dimitri Petrenko. You also briefly play as a third character in the campaign. This is Petty Officer Locke, a weapons operator on a PBY Catalina, who is playable only in the mission “Black Cats.”

Personally I have always played Call of Duty games on Veteran difficulty straight away to get the achievement points, so naturally as its always new gameplay there is alot of room for frustration. As the game informs you when you begin the career “You will not survive!” This couldnt be more true as I think I spent more time dead than alive! That aside the campaign story lines are easy to follow yet very gripping at the same time. Every time the character change would come I kept saying “Oh no I want to see what happens next” Which made me carry on playing… Until I was finished!

A new weapon added to the listed that definately deserves a mention has to be the flame thrower. This devastating ranged weapon will litterally toast anything in its path by just a touch of the flame!

cod5flames(Sprayin’ Flames ‘n’ Takin’ Names!)

To be honest I dont tend to play Call of Duty games much online so I feel I cant really give a true review on it. From what I had seen however it was as always very enjoyable. There is the standard online system in which match making takes place etc. Then there are two other modes. Campaign Co-Op and Campaign Competetive. In Co-Op you simply play through campaign levels with up to 3 other players. In competetive yoou still play through campaign levels with up to 3 other players but the objective is to finish the level with the most points i.e most kills, most objectives complete etc. These modes I briefly played to earn the achievements. It was funny to see the difference between Co-Op when everyone is working as a team to competetive where everyone wants to get everything finished first so its a mad rush!

All in all I give Call of Duty: World at War – 9 out of 10.

C.o.D 5 follows well in the ever growing list of games in its series. It covers a great storyline and the online play lives up to expectations! Bring on Modern Warfare 2!

Review – Guitar Hero: World Tour

20 12 2008

Rockin’ out a new review, this time for Guitar Hero: World Tour.

When you purchase your band in a box edition the first thing you will notice is the size of the box. Its bigger! Why do I hear you ask?! The reason is that Guitar Hero: World Tour has expanded its horizons and now incorporates, a Drum kit and a Microphone.

Following in the footsteps of “Rockband” Guitar Hero: World Tour’s new full four member band playability has been a great success for the instrumental game industry!

The guitar, comes complete with extended strum bar and extended whammy bar both for ease of play. The guitar also now incorporates the Slide bar, which is a touch sensitive strip used for tricky fret tapping solos, this strip can also be tapped to strum rather than using the strum bar, but all of this is explained properly in the in-game tutorials!

The drum kit comes with 3 large round pads for the Green, Red and Blue notes, two symbal pads for the Yellow and Orange notes and a bass pedal for your foot. I have heard there is a force sensor in the pads meaning the harder or lighter you hit them they make a different sound in game, I havent really tested this out though incase I broke the pads! (There have been complaints about broken symbals so be carefull not to hit them to hard!)

You then get a microphone, it is a simple USB plug and play microphone with the GH logo on it, I dont see it having any special use except for its normal singing value!

Im not sure if the pack always comes with a bass guitar, but if you pre-ordered it from GAME you got a free bass guitar. This was however the Guitar from “Guitar hero 2″ I think they were trying to get rid of stock to be honest!

ghwt4play(All four instruments in play! Lead Guitar, Drums, Bass Guitar & Microphone [At the top])

There are some nice new game modes within the game, but I will start with the Story mode!

After creating your character (Male or Female, both unlock secret achievements so get creating!) and choosing your instrument you are greeted with a cutscene detailing the “Life and Times” of your characters’ chosen instrument. In game the gigs are split up and listed in advertisement format “Guitarist Wanted” etc. You then play through song by song, difficulty by difficulty earning a maximum of 5 stars per song dependant on your performance. The object of the game is to watch the “Highway” for notes falling towards you on the screen. (Similar to that of a dance mat if you have played one) You must then press the correct colour coded matching button on your fret board to that of the note on the screen and press the strum bar jus as you would whilst playing a real guitar.

Heres a video of someone playing “Paramore – Misery Business” on expert on Guitar!

There are tutorials to play through which I  recommend you doing first!

(Some of the gigs in career mode you will have to pay for, but are not required for the complete career achievements, if you dont want to play them!)

There is the online multiplayer mode in which you play against other instrumentalists / bands in battles, or in faceoffs where you have to better your opponents scores etc.

And a quickplay mode in which you just freely play songs solo or in your band of up to four players!

A new feature to the Guitar Hero series is the song creator. You can make your own songs by playing any instrument then upload it onto the Guitar Hero servers for other players to download and play! You can also download other peoples songs! It is a bit hard to get used to and I recommend you do the tutorials! But once you get the hang of it you will be rockin’ out masterpieces all over the place!!

ghwtsongcreator1(A song in mid creation!)

When it comes to music every body likes different things, and even myself I always say I will listen to anything once, but after completing career with every instrument I found myself getting tired and some times frustrated with the same songs coming up all of the time. There is a very select few songs that I actually like and enjoy playing. Compared to previous Guitar Hero games where most of the set list is good this one failed rather disappointingly for me as I dont like and had never heard of most of the set list! As I said however each to their own so many people may like the songs!

So finally all in all I give Guitar Hero: World Tour – 8 out of 10.

This game is a lot of fun, I have played everyone in the series so far! The addition of new instruments has made the series even better! but due to its semi-disappointing soundtrack, and because there is alot of “4 member band” achievements, I have to mark it down slightly. (I know its a band game, im just pointing out the fact that due to this alot of the achievements are unavailable to people like me who dont have 4 people to play with!)

Review – A Kingdom for Keflings (Arcade)

17 12 2008

A “Giant” small Review for A Kingdom for Keflings!

“Aww aren’t they cute!” I hear you say as your giant character stomps around the Kingdom, although they may be small these Keflings will do ALOT for you in this addictive arcade game!

The full version of this game will cost you 800 microsoft points and is available for purchase / download from the Xbox Live Marketplace!

As you start a new Kingdom you must choose your “Giant” character. There are a list of preset giants you can select from, or you can use your NXE (New Xbox Experience) Avatar as your character!

The objective of your game is aid the Keflings in gathering resources and creating buildings to expand your Kingdom to eventually create a Castle to house a King or Queen. You do this by collecting resources and constructing buildings. To collect the required resources you must assign jobs to your Keflings followers, the main resource gathering roles you can assign include Lumberjacks, Rock Miners, Crystal Gatherers and Sheep Shearers. Then you will have to give more permanent jobs to other Keflings which you will need to assign as you create certain buildings.

You start off with a few Keflings, a Basic Workshop and your Town Square, from there you must expand by creating pieces of buildings which can then be put together to create their respective final product. To view which pieces are required for each building you can check your blueprints screen (By pressing ‘RB’) and from there you simply gather enough resources to build each piece.

(A busy Giant carrying out his Lumberjack duties)

The heart in the above picture is what is known as “Love”, you need alot of this to continue with your mission to build a Castle, as these little Keflings need places to stay! Due to this you need to create homes for them, and no home is complete without some Love. After you have created all of the required pieces to build a house you can then finish it off by putting a Love heart into it which will provide you with two more Keflings to work with! Love can be found around the landscape randomly after collecting certain resources, or by completing quests.

When you build your Town Hall you will need to assign one of you Keflings as a Mayor, once you do the Mayor will start to offer you quests, which are indicated with a glowing exclamation mark over their head. Upon completion of your quests you are rewarded with more Love or Items that benefit your gameplay, such as running shoes to make you run faster or better belts which increase the load of resource you can carry at one time.

The time scale throughout the gameplay passes very fast, in real time because you lose track of time while playing due to your new addiction, and in game time because there are frequent seasonal changes in weather. One minute it will be bright and sunny and a few minutes later the leaves will be falling, then followed by snow for winter and the cycle continues!

(Snow covered tree tops and pathways during a Kefling Winter time.)

There are a wide range of buildings you can create, which are listed on your blueprints screen in a hierarchy format, meaning some buildings require you make others before they become available, each with its own special bonus for you and your Keflings. These bonuses include increased resource collection rates and quicker movement etc. There is even an artists building which you can use to paint your buildings different colours.

There is also an online game mode in which you must do the same thing as single player, except this time other Xbox Live Users can join in! This did make the gameplay alot more fun mainly because you have people to talk to but also because you can get things done quicker as your other “Giant” gamers join in.

(A happy group of players dancing with their Kefling followers.)

If you are aiming for the full 200 Gamer Points for this game then you will have to do some online exploring for yourself! One achievement “World Traveler” requires you to “Play in an online game where 20 different player banners appear” Player banners can be created via the Town Workshop and display your gamer picture on a flag. The easiest way to get this is to search for a game where the host is “King” and is therefore more likely to have met more people and aquired their banners!

The game will keep you occupied for hours while you build, rebuild and expand your Kingdom. There are however a few downfalls to it. I found the gameplay could become boring at times, that it can be fairly repetitive in that all you have to do is build things and collect resources. Also I found that once you have completed your Kingdom (You have built your castle) there is not alot left to do except for building anything you havent yet built.

So finnally all in all I give A Kingdom for Keflings – 8.5 out of 10.

This game is very enjoyable! It is a nice simple twist on more elaborate building/kingdom construction games like Sim City etc. Except for its minor downfalls hence my slight degrade in score!

Peace & Love To All

- Pigeon

Tips & Hints!

When it comes to building your Town Hall, Keep & Castle, rather than spending out lots of resources bulding all three you can simply upgrade the previous building. You will notice as you pull up the blue print for the chosen upgrade when you unlock it, you will notice that some of the required pieces are dimmed out. This indicates that you have already built them (On the already existing building!) You then simply build the remaining lit pieces to complete the new building!

Secret Achievement: Vanity

In order to achieve these 20 points, you must “Build a glorious statue of oneself”
(You Cant Build Your Avatar!)
To do this you simply build a “Sculptor” building and build 4 busts of any 1 character. Then place them all in a square and a colossus will form, unlocking the achievement :-D

There are 12 achievements with a total of 200 points.

Review – Fallout 3

8 12 2008

Hello Again, Review Time, For A Stunner of A Game!…..

A baby’s cry is the first thing you hear as you enter the game, a masked figure stands infront of you, and you can see a womans leg to your left, after choosing a name, and completing the gene re-production program to see how your character looks in the future, you are taken from the room. Yes thats right you have just been born!

A short loading screen appears and suddenly it is a year later, this is where you learn the basics of movement and object interaction. You live in an underground safe haven known as Vault 101, you are living here to escape the dangers of the post nuclear appocolyptic Wahington DC which is now known as “Capital Wasteland”.

A short while later you are thrown into your 10th Birthday party where you recieve your Pip-Boy 3000, you learn about interacting with other characters and how selecting different speech options determines your leniency towards having a Good or Evil character, you recieve a BB gun from your father and are taken into a small room where you come across your first enemy and learn the basics of shooting and the V.A.T.S system (Vault-Tec Assisted Targetting System).

After the party you find yourself in your father’s office now aged 16 and ready to take your G.O.A.T test (Generalized Occupational Aptitude Test) This is a clever way to determine your characters initial preffered skills.

When you finish the test you return to your father’s office to see a final cutscene, after which you find yourself aged 19 and at the begining of your Fallout journey!

Now aged 19 you awake to find your friend Amata stading infront of you, she informs you that your father has escaped from Vault 101 and offers assistance in your following him.

When you finnally reach the exit to Vault 101 and manage to escape you get a final chance to edit your characters Name, Appearance, and Basic Skills etc before you continue.

Upon emerging from Valut 101 you are greeted by the glorious sight of the Capital Wasteland, now you can really see the reason to its name!

fallout-3-wasteland1(Not the first thing you see upon leaving Vault 101, this is just an example of Capital Wasteland!)

The now broken empty space in which the old Washington DC existed is in front of you, and you find yourself in a small predicament… What do I do now?!

(A very similar situation you found yourself in at the begining of, if you played another of Bethesda’s marvelous creations, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion)

This game is huge, you can stand on the top of the tallest cliff, or tower and say to yourself “Wherever I look, as far as my eye can see, I can travel there”! Your Pip-Boy 3000 is going to be your best friend during your journey through Fallout 3 as it is your menu screen, your health/status/skills screen, it contains information on everything you have done during your game and it contains information on all of the weapons and items you are carrying, it even has its own light to brighen up dark places for you, but most importantly it is your map of and guide to the Capital Wasteland!

With an abundance of main story and side quests to get through there is a huge amount of play time. Personally I completed all of the quests in just over 55 hours over a week, this included doing everything required for the 1000 gamerpoint score after gaining all of the achievements (Listed at the end of the review!)

During your journeys throughout the Capital Wasteland you will discover many locations spread across the map, these locations are then listed on your Pip-Boy map for future reference and you can then “Fast Travel” to them, rather than having to run everywhere.

Throughout the map you will encounter a wide variety of characters some good, some bad and some that simply want to kill you!  Good characters are mainly found within settlements and cities, and offer trade and Quests, Neutral characters who dont say anything to you but wont attack you are usually Wasteland Settlers and Ghouls, Ghouls are people that became mutated by the radiation but did not die. (They look to me like their skin is inside out) Ghouls live for a lot longer than normal humans and there are normal Ghouls some of which you can talk to and there are the nasty kind “Feral ghouls”, these guys have been affected by radiation to much and have lost their minds thereby becoming violent and wont think twice about attacking you!

fallout-3-feral-ghoul

(Feral Ghoul under fire from a Mini-Gun)

Bad characters like Raiders and Mercenaries are usually found randomly throughout the Wasteland and will always offer a fight.

Then you will come across a wide variety of creatures all mutated due to the excess in nuclear radiation lingering around. A few of these include Yao Guai which are ravenous bear like creatures that lunge towards you to attack. Death claws remind me a little bit of Velociraptors, they run on two legs towards you and strike with with huge claws, which usually knocks your head clean off if your at a low level, or dont have power armour!

Other characters you meet along your travels can become followers of yours and will folow you around and aid you in fighting, I will let you discover them for yourself but one name I will mention is Fawkes! If you meet this character you WANT them as a follower! You can also find a dog called Dogmeat.

fallout-3-dogmeat1

(Come here Boy!)

Fighting plays the biggest part in this game, as you will always find something to attack while either exploring or carrying out Quests. There are a large variety of weapons to be used from pistols to plasma rifles, power fists to frag mines, all of which are very usefull! You will know if something is attacking you as the background music will change, either that or you will visually see an attack/attacker approaching! You can fight melee or use weapons, and you can manually attack, aim shoot etc, or you can use the very usefull V.A.T.S system (Mentioned above) This targetting system pauses the battle and displays the enemies in front of you, you can choose an enemy to attack with the right analog stick. When you have chosen your target you can then choose a body part to attack, each body part has a percentage over it which is the percent chance you have of hitting that body part. Once you have chosen what to attack you then accept your command and a scene will  play of your character firing at/attacking the chosen body part(s). This system however has its flaw in that it requires AP points to be used, although these regenerate at a fair pace you more often than not will find your self fighting and finishing off enemies manually, while your AP recharges. (Until you reach level 20 when a perk becomes available to instantly restore lost AP points in V.A.T.S. IF you get a kill)

fallout_3_vats1

(At [95%] Pigeon thinks a body shot is on the cards!!)

Fallout 3 has a brilliant story line to follow which has a fixed basis but some methods and paths you take can alter how you get to the end, for instance talking to certain people may leave some quests un-needed if you find out certain information etc. The game does have many different endings however determined by your games actions, your characters Karma leniency and doing different (optional) side quests can also affect the ending!

This game comes highly recommended by myself and by everyone ive spoken to about it! The only bad word I can say about it is that it did eventually come to an end!

So finnally all in all I have to give Fallout 3 – 10 out of 10.

The Game is yet another piece of Bethesda magnificence, these guys can do it all! From Oblivion’s swords and horses, to Fallout 3’s Guns and Ghouls! Bring on The Fallout 4

Peace & Love To All

(Information From HERE)

————————————————————————————————

*Tips and Hints*

Quest Completion: - If you are aiming to gain all of the achievements then it is very importnant that you do so before completeing the last Quest. The final Quest is found in the Citadel and is activated by talking to Sentinel Lyons, the Quest is called “Take it Back” When you reach this Quest Sentinel Lyons will ask you if you are ready to make the final assault on the “Jefferson Memorial” You should say you are NOT yet ready to end the conversation! I suggest you make a separate save in which you can simply return staight back to the Citadel when you are ready to continue the Quest. Then carry on exploring and gaining all of the other achievements you require, leaving “Take it Back” until last!

Perks:- Try to think logically about your perks upon levelling up. Try to think which perks work best for your gameplay style and characters current statistics. Three perks I highly recommend you select as soon as they become available are the…

”Educated” perk in which each level of Educated will add +2 skill points when you gain a new experience level”

“Strong Back” perk which lets gives you a higher encumberment rating so you can carry more items!

“Here and Now” perk which immediately grants an additional experience level, complete with all the advantages that brings. (Best used as a quick boost to gain the Karma Level Achievements!)

Experience Achievements: - As you play through the game whatever you do will affect your leniency towards a good, neutral or evil character this is known as your characters Karma. Some of the achievements require you to reach character experience levels at certain Karma levels i.e. you must reach levels 8, 14 and 20 with Good, Neutral and Evil Karma. Do to this realistically you will need to play through the game 3 times following the respective Karmatic lenience. If however you dont want to play through 3 times, but stil want the achievements then you should follow this little guide!

I suggest you play through with a Good character on your first run through! Upon reaching the levels just before the ones you need for the achievements i.e. 7, 13 and 19 you should save your game into a separate slot from your main game. Then if you are a Good character then simply continue your game as you are (Whilst leaving the other save game separate!) Then when you reach the respective level you will get the achievement. Then Save your main game slot and re-load your other save game. Then go on a human killing spree and just generally be Evil! When you get to Neutral Karma save your game to yet another slot and leave that as it is then continue on your killing spree untill you reach Evil Karma, upon doing so simply level up to get your Evil achievement, then load your Neutral Karma save game and level up to gain that achievement, you should then have all 3 for the level you need. Finnally load your Main save game again and continue playing until you reach the next required level! Hope this helps!

Very Easy Experience: - This is not a glitch or a cheat I suppose its a semi defect within the game. To use this method you need to get to “Big Town” which is shown on this map…

big_town_map

Upon arrival you are greeted by a wary guard choose nice safe speech options and he will let you in, I mean dont be threatening or nasty! You then need to speak to a girl called “Bittercup” I think she prefers night time so simply wait a few hours by pressing your back button (Xbox version obviously) until night. She tends be be creeping around! When you find her I suggest you save incase it doesnt work then you can just re-load and try agin but you need to speak to her and choose positive speech options then make sure the last one you say is…

“No, I’m not seeing anyone.”

You then need to speak to another character in Big Town called “Pappy” and use this speech option…

[Speech 100%] So, you came here with Bittercup, right?” Whenever you say this line, you’ll earn 7 XP

You will then gain experience for it. But wait when you finish using the said speech option you will notice you can say it again, and again, and yes again, over and over for unlimited experience! The one thing though is that you wil have a percentage rating listed infront of the speech option, this determines how likely you are to succeed in saying it. But if even if you fail you can still say it again! Hope this helps! This is best used in conjuction with the guide above to simply boost your level to gain the achievements, then just re-load your game and no one will ever know!

MAKE SURE you do the above experience booster BEFORE you do the Quest in Big Town other wise the said speech options become unavailable!!

Review – Mirrors Edge

1 12 2008

Another Review! This Time For The High Flying…

Well my opinion on this game was quite unexpected to be honest! But in a good way!

After seeing the television advert I was very LESS than impressed, I dont know about anyone else but to witness the advert if you havent seen anything about the game before it seemed a bit messy and quick…

…but after playing the demo my opinion was swayed! Enough to make me buy the game!

The basic back story begins with government oppression, leading to rebellion, these rebels are branded “criminals”. Therefore these rebels employ the “Runners” (One of which you play within the game “Faith”). These runners are employed to deliver messages and packages around the city because conventional postage is impossible for the rebels. Except all turns a bit sour when the “Blues” start shooting! But Why…..

The idea of a first person free running game didnt appeal to me at first as it seemed a little obscure! For instance “Assassins Creed” was heavily based on the characters free running capabilities but that was in 3rd person, so you could see your character’s movements and what he was doing! But in all honesty the first person view really works in this as for the most part you feel like you are the runner you can see directly through Faith’s eyes, you see where you must go and then must decide what free running skill you need to perform to get where you need to go!

Upon selecting the campaign you are thrown into the action straight away with the training level, in which you learn the basics about how to move around, over, under and through obstacles and how to do it fluidly and quickly. You also learn the basics of combat, but trust me in this game you want to avoid combat! Hence the title “Runner”

Following the training mission comes 10 mission based levels as you take part in some mad high rooftop jumps, speedy escape scenes, and other kickass bullet evading wall running antics.

Although some people may find it annoying, i actually really like the health system, it is very realistic! Just a few shots from a gun or a few attacks in a fist fight will kill you. I find it good as it obviously makes you want to escape and run and dodge as best you can for fear of a quick death!

This game however is rather short, it can be easily finished in one day, on your first play through, as I myself played on normal first to get used to the play, i will soon go on to complete the game on hard.

Upon completion of the levels you unlock speed runs for each of them, in which you have to finish the said level under the set time, (I havent attempted these yet!)

Also you can unlock time trials, in which you have to complete set courses as quick as possible, each of these courses has a 3 star review, you earn better star ratings (up to 3 stars) for each trail dependant on how quick you do it, this all comes down to practise, you will need to learn the course to perfect each hop skip and jump at the right time, because every second is precious, these trials are very unforgiving with the time limits!

The scenery in this game is stunning! The views from the rooftops look amazing and the action is great, a small complaint is that the levels are very linear i.e. your trying to get somewhere as quick as you can without dying

This game has amazing soundtrack…

Still Alive – Lisa Miskovsky

This was one of the first times i watched a game’s end credits all the way through, simply to listen to this piece of beauty <3

So finnally all in all I give Mirror’s Edge – 8 out of 10.

This game is good, I enjoyed the story and gameplay with the excitement of the high flying free running, but due to its rather repetitive play and lack of things to do after story mode / speedruns of the story mode, I have to mark it down slightly.
